Radio Waves

by Walter Winchell

PREFACE

Walter Winchell, one of the best known newspaper columnists and radio personality in 1948, might well have made the following comments during his Sunday night broadcasts:

August 19th:

Good Evening, Mr. and Mrs. America, and all the ships at sea . . .

We all know our Miss Gene Marshall has been performing in Summer Stock Theatre this year . . . to well deserved standing ovations no less . . . but we just learned something new on that front! Yes, not only has Gene agreed to star in "The Beauty and the Beast" for the Children's Theatre but she has also promised to return this December for a role in "A Christmas Carol".
Miss Marshall will be featured as the Young Scrooge's love interest in Christmas Past. We'll know there's something wrong with Scrooge when he turns down Gene for money. I've already sent my reservation for this performance!

July 9th:

Good Evening, Mr. and Mrs. America, and All the Ships At Sea . . .

Well this was a wonderful Fourth of July weekend for all of us, what with most of our boys back home in the country they were defending for so many months and years.
I have to admit we had an additional pleasure on our agenda this past weekend. Yes, that's right, we did manage to get tickets to see Miss Gene Marshall in the Summer Stock Theatre's annual production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night Dream". What a delightful comedy. The entire cast was wonderful but Gene as Hermia was very, very special. Lovely (of course) in a white Grecian gown ; she had everyone pulling for her as she tried to wed her true love, in spite of her father and all the tricks the Gods and Fairies added to the evening's delights.

June 18th:

Good Evening, Mr. and Mrs. America, and All the Ships At Sea . . .

You've heard the good news? Miss Gene Marshall is well and doing a capital job as the leading actress for a Community Summer Stock Theatre on the shores of the Atlantic. This weekend she was wonderful, they tell me, as Gwendolen in "The Importance of Being Earnest" by the controversial British writer, Oscar Wilde. You can believe that her appearance was a surprise to both the Hollywood and the Broadway acting communities!
As soon as Lois Lane and the young Walt Kerr printed their scoop in "The Daily Planet", everyone who could was beating a path to the Theater door for the Saturday night and Sunday matinee performances. To say they were sold out is an understatement! Now "everyone" is also trying to get tickets for the other three plays scheduled this summer. I can understand why Miss Marshall kept her summer plans quiet as long as she could! I must congratulate Gene, on taking the time to perfect her craft by appearing in plays in addition to the films she does so well. It's a different medium, but she is showing us that she excels there too.
Now I'm going to compete with everyone else and try to get tickets for the Fourth of July weekend production, "A Midsummer's Night Dream" - wish me luck!

June 11th:

Good Evening, Mr. and Mrs. America, and all the Ships at Sea. . .

Have you been following the news - or rather lack of news - on our favorite new star Miss Gene Marshall? My good friend Mrs. Hopper tells us that Gene was even missing at the benefit for the Cancer Research Fund. That is most suprising as I've spoken with Miss Marshall myself and have found her very committed to helping those in need. Frankly, I'm concerned . . . we'll all anxiously await news on this mysterious disappearance. And before you think of it, let me assure you that Gene would never seek seclusion like Miss Garbo did. That's just not possible.
