Breaking News by Brenda Starr
Preface: Brenda Starr is a reporter for The Flash, a large metropolitan newspaper. The following exerpts are taken from stories Miss Starr might have written in 1948.
July 23rd: Gene's Theatre Costume Designer: Regina Wentworth
An Interview by Brenda Starr
It was with great pleasure that I met backstage at the Community Summer Stock Theatre with Regina Wentworth, Wardrobe Mistress and Costume Designer for the 1948 productions.
Brenda: Let's start with the question everyone has . . . how is it to work with the actress, Gene Marshall?
Regina: A delight! She has a sunny and helpful dispositon and she's a dream come true to costume with her gorgeous figure -
B: What kinds of costumes are coming in the few plays?
R: Gene plays a "fallen" woman next in "Anna Christie". It was a challenge! We set the play in the thirties and the stage direction says Anna's (Gene's) "profession" is obvious on first appearance. I did her daytime dress in an evening fabric, made it hug her figure with neckline and skirt slits plus trimmed it a little "gaudy" - she looks great!
B: Which costume is your favorite?
R: I loved creating her Can-Can costume for "The Merry Widow" but the ballgown is truly spectacular - wait until you see it!
June 19th: Movie Star Secret Revealed!
by Brenda Starr
Miss Gene Marshall, direct from Hollywood, is the leading actress for our local Summer Stock Theatre this year . . . and she is tremendous! This weekend all performances were sold out and the audiences gave Miss Marshall well deserved standing ovations. Everyone who had a ticket was being offered triple the cost to resell. Those who had bought summer subcriptions were feeling very pleased with themselves.
The Theatre staff realized their good fortune when Miss Marshall signed on for the summer, but hadn't expected the demand that has instantly materialized. To accommodate Miss Marshall's many fans, extra performances have been scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in addition to the weekends.
Watch for upcoming interviews with various members of the Theatre over the next few weeks . . . including one with Miss Marshall, scheduled after the traditional Fourth of July Shakespeare presentation, "A Midsummer's Night Dream".
June 15th: Summer Stock Theatre Secrets?
by Brenda Starr
The following members of the Community Summer Stock Theatre, who had previously agreed to interviews with this reporter for The Flash, unanimously refused to meet today. All claimed last minute rehersals and illness as "reasons"( or maybe they were excuses?):
Max - the Theatre Director for the previous two years (and Drama Professor at our University);
Regina Wentworth - the Wardrobe Mistress for the Theatre (and senior student ot our College of Design);
Mr. Johnson - the town Mayor and strong supporter of the Summer Stock Theatre.
Mrs. Johnson, the Mayor's wife and President of the Women's Club, was persuaded to speak briefly with us regarding The Children's Theatre. The members of the Women's Club sponsor two performances a year to raise funds to benefit children in the community. Current plans include a stage play for the children on Labor Day. She stated that many of the performers in the Summer Stock Theatre have volunteered their talents for this show. The actual play has not yet been chosen but they are considering "The Beauty and the Beast", "Cinderella" or "Sleeping Beauty". Mrs. Johnson also indicated that the lead actress for the play had already donated her services but Mrs. Johnson refused to reveal the name of the actress. Mrs. Johnson became quite flustered and closed the interview when asked if she didn't "agree that Gene Marshall would be the perfect lead?"
To Be Continued!
June 14th: EXTRA! Missing Movie Star near Metropolis?
by Brenda Starr
Metropolis Police Department has received reports of sightings of the missing movie star, Miss Gene Marshall, authorities informed us. Two different individuals from Metropolis told The Flash they saw a beautiful woman who looked just like Gene Marshall in the nearby community of XXX. One saw the woman walking through the lobby of The Seaside Hotel, while another saw her entering the Post Office.
The staff at the Seaside Hotel and at the Post Office were interviewed by this reporter but no collaboration of the sightings could be found. However, this sleuth observed that the Community Summer Stock Theatre begins the first of four plays this coming weekend. Could the mystery be a unknown connection of Gene Marshall with this Theatre? Interviews with several members of the Theatre staff are scheduled for tomorrow. See more information in The Flash Evening Edition.
